Srila Bhakti Ballabh Tirtha Goswami Maharaja

by Srila B.B. Bodhayan Maharaja

As per the lunar cycle, Srila Maharaj, His Divine Grace’s appearance and disappearance both occurred on the same Navami Tithi (ninth day of lunar cycle). Srila Maharaj appeared on Ram-Navami day and the day of his disappearance was also on Navami (6th of Vaishakh 1424 Bangavda , 20 April 2017 Thursday at 10.15 pm). This is indeed astonishing!

In this regard I would like to quote from Sri Chaitanya Charitamrita (SCC), one of the most valuable scripture of Gaudiya Vaisnava community, written by Srila Krishnadas Kaviraj Goswami, who is Kasturi Manjari in the eternal abode, Goloka Vrindavan, serving Sri Sri Radha-Krishna, the Divine couple in their divine esoteric pastimes.

“Iswarer Janma-Tithi Ye Hena Pavitra.
Vaisnavera Janma-Tithir Sei Mata Charitra.”

Meaning: The divinity and purity which is attributed to the appearance day (lunar cycle known as tithi) of the Supreme Lord, the same importance has to be given to the appearance day (lunar cycle) of a pure devotee (vaishnava).

We all know Lord Sri Ram Chandra is the incarnation of proper etiquette and conduct (Maryada Purushottam). Similarly as per my observation, the character of His Divine Grace represents proper spiritual etiquette for the present generation of the Gaudiya Vaisnava community to follow. Therefore the Supreme Lord first sent and then physically took His Divine Grace away from us on the same 9th day of lunar cycle (Navami Tithi).

His Divine Grace became Acharya of Sri Chaitanya Gaudiya Math in 1979. I was fortunate to associate with Srila Maharaj several times since1978. I used to stay consistently at Sri Chaitanya Gaudiya Math, Kolkata branch, with my spiritual Master, His Divine Grace Srila Bhakti Pramode Puri Goswami Thakur from 1990 to 1994. During this time period, I used to serve my Spiritual Master under the guidance of Srila Bhakti Ballabha Tirtha Goswami Maharaj. During that period I saw the way he used to respect and treat all vaishnavas with great affection. While associating with Srila Bhakti Ballabha Tirtha Goswami Maharaj, I felt that he is the living replica of his spiritual master, His Divine Grace Srila Bhakti Dayita Madhava Goswami Maharaj, the founder of Sri Chaitanya Gaudiya Math.

Looking back I remember once there was some disagreement amongst devotees in Sri Chaitanya Gaudiya Math, due to the influence of Kali-Yuga. However Srila Bhakti Ballabha Tirtha Goswami Maharaj in his resolve for maintaining vaishnava etiquette always honored his Godbrothers and simultaneously advised his disciples that they should keep tolerance and respect all his Godbrothers and vaishnavas. I heard from his lotus lips that if we were not able to free ourselves from vaishnava offenses, then our devotional service will not be accepted by our worshipable Deities, (Sri Sri Guru and Gaurango and Sri Sri Radha Govinda jiu).

Srila Bhakti Ballabha Tirtha Goswami Maharaj’s disappearance pastime makes me feel that the Gaudiya Vaisnava community has lost a valuable asset. Someone who taught the devotional path by setting his own example! Srila Maharaj was and will continue to be a valuable devotional guide and preceptor for all of us.

I remember one incidence which occurred after the disappearance of my spiritual master. For some reason I was on the verge of leaving service of my Gurudev. When Srila Bhakti Ballabha Tirtha Goswami Maharaj came to know this, he called for me through HH Srila Bhakti Prajnan Hrishikesh Maharaj, the then Math-in-Charge of Sri Chaitanya Gaudiya Math in Kolkata. Srila Maharaj then gave me a most valuable instruction, “Close your eyes, ears and mouth which meant ignore all undesirable talks and unworthy sights. Speak properly when necessary and in this way patiently hope for the mercy of the Supreme Lord. Thus you will realize the mercy of Sri Sri Radha Krishna coming to you through Srila Puri Goswami Maharaj.” Since then I am following his this instruction which helps me to face any unusual and strange predicaments. Thus I realized the importance of this valuable instruction.

Another incidence I vividly remember while I was in Kolkata Sri Chaitanya Gaudiya Math, Srila Bhakti Ballabha Tirtha Goswami Maharaj used to come after evening Arati every day, to offer obeisance to my Gurudeva, at the third floor. I saw how when Srila Maharaj offered prostrated obeisance to my spiritual master, my spiritual master also reciprocated by offering obeisance to Srila Maharaj. As soon as Srila Bhakti Ballabha Tirtha Goswami Maharaj saw my spiritual master offering him obeisance, immediately he said, “Maharaj, you are Siksha-Guru of our Mission and I am of your disciples stature, therefore please I feel unworthy.” In this regard, my spiritual Master gravely replied, “I am not paying you obeisance, actually, I am paying obeisance to the chair of His Divine Grace Srila Bhakti Dayita Madhava Goswami Maharaj as well as to your renounced attire (sannyas). Nowadays, such exemplary behavior is becoming rare amongst the present vaishnava-community.

Another incidence I remember is from Sri Chaitanya Gaudiya Math Jagannath Puri, the birthplace of my grand Spiritual Master, His Divine Grace Srila Bhakti Siddhanta Saraswati Goswami Thakur Prabhupada. It was 1990, five days before Ratha-Yatra festival. Early morning my maternal grandfather, Srila Madan Mohan Das Adhikary Prabhu arrived at the temple, while Srila Bhakti Ballabha Tirtha Goswami Maharaj was leading the morning kirtan with Mridanga played by Sriman Bhagawan Prabhu (presently Madhusudan Maharaj) along with five other devotees. As soon as Madan Mohan das Adhikary Prabhu, reached the Sankirtan hall of the temple, immediately Srila Bhakti Ballabha Tirtha Goswami Maharaj came to pay him obeisance. I was awed to see Srila Maharaj’s great humility to pay obeisance even to a householder disciple of Srila Prabhupada.

Although, I am like his disciple, in both age and experience, whenever I went to pay him obeisance, immediately he would offer me the same without hesitation.

In conclusion I would like to say that Srila Maharaj was the perfect embodiment of etiquette, humility, tolerance together with congregational chanting which the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Sri Krishna in the form of Sri Krishna Chaitanya Mahaprabhu established for delivering the fallen souls from this age of hypocrisy (Kali-Yuga).

Today, I am falling at the lotus feet of His Divine Grace Srila Bhakti Ballabha Tirtha Goswami Maharaj to beg for strength to be able to continue with my services of the Mission of my Spiritual Master, my grand Spiritual Master – His Divine Grace Srila Bhakti Siddhanta Saraswati Goswami Thakur Prabhupada and Sri Krishna Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, just the way he did all his life with purity.

An unworthy and aspiring servant of the servant of Sri Sri Radha-Govinda.

Shiva ShankaracaryaHe re-established the supreme authenticity and decorum of the Vedas, and founded the philosophy of ‘brahmakaran-vad’ (Brahm as Ultimate cause).

In later ages, the Vaishnav stalwarts built the philosophy of bhakti upon this same foundation stone.

When I was traveling with my Guru Maharaj, Srila Bhakti Vaibhav Puri Goswami Maharaj, I could really witness what Srila A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami had accomplished. He had planted the seed for Bhakti in the most unbelievable places around the world. And wherever we arrived, many people flocked to my Guru Maharaj thirsty for sadhu-sangha. Because we are all one big family the followers of Sri Gauranga, devotees received us with so much love.

This inspired my Guru Maharaj in his advanced age to travel 11 times around the world. Previously he did not want to travel to the west at all. But seeing the need of the many souls his heart melted for them.

All glories to Sri Guru and Gauranga!

Srila Bhakti Vigyan Bharati Maharaj was a friend to me for more then 25 years.
His superiority in age and in all the aspects were not hindrances for having a wonderful deep friendship. I shared so many beautiful moments with him while he was preparing Chaitanya Charitamrita with Srila Bhakti Prasad Puri Maharaj in Vrindavan.

He was that type of Shiksa Guru who makes you always feel that you have a dear friend who you can fully trust. His departure is a great loss for the international Vaishnava Community, as the Chief Adviser of the World Vaishnava Association he gave me even more mercy. Only then he started to be so busy as disciples flocked to him from all over the world after Srila Bhaktivedanta Narayan Maharaj left the world.

I pray for his mercy. He has taken with him a memory of love for all other Gaudiya Acaryas and their holy lilas. Fortunately he shared quite a few of them in his late lectures compiled in some books as well.

We will always remember this stalward soul who made the lotus feet of his Gurudeva Srila Bhakti Dayita Madhava Maharaj his life and soul.

The Attainment of the Dust of Vraja by Sripada Bhaktivedanta Swami Maharaja

by Srila B.P. Puri Maharaja

Tridandi-swami Srimad Bhaktivedanta Swami Maharaja (Srila A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada), Founder-Acarya of the world famous International Society for Krishna Consciousness, attained the dust of Vraja at the age of 81 on Monday 14th November (corresponding to the 19th day of the month of Damodara, 491 Gaurabda, on the Sukla Caturthi) in the evening at 7:20 pm in his Krsna-Balarama Temple situated in Sridhama Vrndavana, surrounded by his disciples loudly performing sankirtana, while remembering the lotus feet of Sri Sri Guru-Gauranga Gandharvika-Giridhari Jiu.

On 15th November at 12:00 noon, the acarya of Sri Caitanya Gaudiya Matha (Sripad Bhakti Dayita Madhava Maharaja) was informed of the news by telephone by the Kolkata branch of ISKCON in Albert Road. Hearing it, he was very much mortified and immediately sent a telegram to Sri Sri Krsna-Balarama Temple in Vrndavana expressing his sincere respects and condolences.

That night, Pujyapada Madhava Maharaja, while lecturing on the Srimad Bhagavata, related briefly Sripada Swami Maharaja’s life history and the news of his disappearance to the audience. Also on the next day, on Wednesday evening, while speaking on the Bhagavata, Pujyapada Madhava Maharaja expressed his pain of separation for his godbrother Swami Maharaja and highly praised his worldwide preaching of the message of Sri Caitanya within a very short span of time. He further revealed the specialty that his foreign disciples have – completely changing their dress code, food, dietary habits and etiquette, and welcoming all Vaisnava behaviour such as accepting a humble dress befitting a Gaudiya Vaisnava, accepting bhagavat-prasada, wearing tulasi beads around the neck, keeping japa-mala in their hands, decorating their limbs with gopi-candana etc, and without any inhibition incessantly performing maha-mantra kirtana, studying devotional scriptures and worshipping the sri vigraha. All this is very happy news.

Srimad Swami Maharaja took birth in the English year 1896 in a devotee family in Kolkata. The name of his father from his previous asrama was Gaura Mohan De. His father gave him the name, Abhay Charan De. His father was initiated into the Gaudiya Vaisnava dharma. Abhay Charan also received many instructions on devotion to Sri Gaura-Krsna from his revered father. He passed B.A with honours in Philosophy from Scottish Church College in Kolkata. Later in his working life, he took the position of manager in a chemical company (Dr Karttik Basu’s laboratory in Amherst Street). After working there for some time, he started independently manufacturing medicines. He was married in the year 1918, and in 1933, while in the grhasta asrama, he accepted the shelter of the holy feet of the sun-like acarya of the Gaudiya-Vaisnavas Jagad-guru Nitya-lila-pravista Om Visnupada 108 Sri Srimad Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Gosvami Thakura. His initiated name became Sri Abhaya-caranarvinda Dasa Adhikari.

In the year 1959, he took shelter of tridandi sannyasa-vesa from the disciple of the worshippable Sri Srila Sarasvati Gosvami Thakura, the acarya of Sri Gaudiya Vedanta Samiti in Navadvipa, Tridandi Swami Srimad Bhakti Prajnana Kesava Maharaja and came to be known as Tridandi Swami Bhaktivedanta Swami Maharaja. Later, he identified himself as Sri A.C Bhaktivedanta Swami Maharaja.

In the year 1944, he published a monthly magazine in English called, Back to Godhead. This magazine is now widely circulated. In various languages millions of copies are sent every month to devotees in various countries. Apart from this, Srimad Swami Maharaja has published many books in English. He has written each and every stanza of Sri Caitanya-caritamrta by Srila Krsna Dasa Kaviraja Goswami in Bengali and again transliterated them into English. Then, the way in which he gave the meaning of every word in English and the mastery with which he again translated the entire stanza to English is a matter of special jubilation for any Gaudiya Vaisnava. English speaking devotees very much appreciate this edition as they also have the opportunity to learn the Bengali language while reading that book. The book has been published in several parts. I have heard that its price has been fixed to Rs. 800. In this way, all of his books written about gaura-lila and krsna-lila have been specially honored by the intelligentsia of the western world.

In the year 1956, Srila Swami Maharaja came to Sridhama Vrndavana and eventually stayed at Sri Sri Radha-Damodara Temple in 1959. During this time, he translated the first two cantos of Srimad Bhagavata into English. The translation of books such as the Gita also continued. In the year 1965 at the age of 70, he started for the United States with very little money and means. After one year, he rented a small room in Manhattan in 26 Second Avenue and auspiciously started ISKCON there. At first, he went to New York City via Boston and started preaching the holy name with the accompaniment of mrdanga at Tompkins Square Park. Slowly, good people became attracted to his mission in large numbers. Within just 12 years his preaching spread in all corners of the world. Many educated and wealthy men and women took shelter under him. One by one many preaching centres were established in different parts of the world and the chanting of the holy name reverberated in the sky. After giving the responsibility of managing his spiritual organisation and preaching mission to his disciples, he left for the eternal abode.

There is special plan to construct a 250-foot temple at the Sri Mayapura Candrodaya Temple established by him at Sridhama Mayapura. I hope that his most qualified disciples will soon endeavor diligently in every way possible to fulfill their spiritual master’s desire. Sriman Mahprabhu’s desire was:

prithivite ache jata nagaradi grama sarvatra pracara haibe mora nama

“In every town and village of the world the holy name will be chanted.” (Caitanya-bhagavata)

Sri Gaura’s very own associate Srila Thakura Bhaktivinoda and Sri Srila Prabhupada Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura also had such a special desire and predicted that the message of Sri Caitanya would be preached in England. Srila Swami Maharaja especially endeavored to fulfill their desire in every way. It is a matter of great pride for us that various sevas such as the Deity service of Sri Sri Guru-Gauranga Gandharvika-Giridhari Jiu and festivals like jhulan, Dola-yatra etc, as well as the Ratha-yatra of Sri Sri Jagannatha, Baladeva and Subhadra Jiu are being celebrated in various elite places on continents like Europe and America. Altogether, we are praying at the lotus feet of Bhagavan that the service activities in the organisation established by Srila Swami Maharaja will be managed beautifully with more and more enthusiasm.

Srila Swami Maharaja fell ill since the last Dola Purnima, but even still, in that condition, he travelled to foreign countries in order to visit his various temples located there. In the last September month, he went to London. By the desire of Sri Bhagavan he began staying in Sri Vrndavana from October. There he obtained the mercy of Sri Sri Vrndavanesvari.

Sripada Krsna Dasa Babaji Mahasaya fortunately arrived at Sri Caitanya Gaudiya Matha in Kolkata on 20th November 1977. He was present in Sri Vrndavana when Srimad Swami Maharaja was leaving his body. From him we heard that the disciples of Sripada Swami Maharaja were tirelessly chanting hari-nama surrounding his bed on four sides. Although Swami Maharaja had stopped speaking, till the last moment his lips were moving. When Vaisnavas like Sripada Vana Maharaja and Krsna Dasa Babaji Maharaja came to have his darsana, his disciples loudly announced their identity near his ears and he raised his holy hand to his head to show his respect towards them. Even till the last moment of his disappearance his knowledge did not falter. Even after the pastime of his disappearance, his disciples chanted the holy name loudly throughout the whole night. On the Tuesday morning of Sukla-Pancami, he was carried in a decorated palanquin and, accompanied by loud nama-sankirtana, circumambulated the famous seven temples of Vrndavana. Every head Goswami showed him proper respect befitting a Vaisnava acarya by offering him prasada-garlands and sandalwood paste. After that, he was taken to his Krsna-Balarama Temple situated in Ramana-reti and given samadhi as per the standard of sastra.

Glorification of Śrīmad Bhakti Vicāra Yāyāvara Mahārāja in the Wake of His Disappearance
(October 10, 2017)

My Beloved Masters
By Śrī Śrīmad Bhakti Pramoda Purī Gosvāmī Mahārāja

A recipient of Śrīla Prabhupāda’s affection

It is a matter of heart-rending grief that on Monday, 15 October 1984, the day of Kṛṣṇa-ṣaṣtḥī, on the occasion of Śrī Śrīla Narottama Ṭhākura Mahāśaya’s disappearance, a supremely dear disciple of my most worshipful śrī gurupāda-padma and a recipient of his affection left this world. At approximately six in the evening, Śrīla Prabhupāḍa’s last sannyāsī disciple, our godbrother parama-pūjyapāda tridaṇḍi-svāmī Śrīmad Bhakti Vicāra Yāyāvara Mahārāja, entered nitya-līlā in Śrī Śyāmānanda Gauḍīya Maṭha in Medinīpura while fully conscious and remembering the beautiful lotus feet of Śrī Śrī Guru-Gaurāṅga Gāndhārvikā-Giridhārī-jiu amid a grand saṅkīrtana performed by the resident devotees of the maṭha.

Attaining the mercy of śrī guru

In pūjyapāda Mahārāja’s Śrī Śrī Bhāgavata-gītāmṛta, he has written the following in a song titled Śrī Guru-kṛpā-labha, ‘Attaining the Mercy of Śrī Guru’:

sad-guru sambandha āra bhāgavata-gāthā
purī-dhāme giyā āmi pāinu sarvathā

By going to Purī-dhāma, I attained everything—a relationship with a bona fide guru and the opportunity to hear the glories of the Lord.

jagannātha dīna-bandhu patita-pāvana
āmā ākarṣiyā dilā sad-guru-caraṇa

Jagannātha is the friend of the wretched and the savior of the fallen. He attracted me and gave me the feet of a bona fide guru.

guru-binā gati nāi jāninu jakhôna
sad-gurura anveṣaṇe chuṭinu takhôna

When I knew I had no hope without a guru, I went searching for a bona fide spiritual master.

jagannātha-dhāme more śrī-guru-caraṇa
teraśa’tetriśa sāle pāinu daraśana

In Jagannātha-Dhāma, in 1333 (Baṅgābda), I received my first view of the lotus feet of my śrī guru.

oṁ śrī bhaktisiddhānta sarasvatī viṣṇupāda
tini-ī āmāra guru śrīla prabhupāda

Oṁ Śrī Bhaktisiddhānta Sarasvatī, is the direct representative of Viṣṇu. He alone is my guru, this Śrīla Prabhupāda.

From this song, we learn that pūjyapāda Mahārāja went to Śrī Jagannāthakṣetra and took shelter at the lotus feet of the Lord of the universe, Śrī Jagannātha-deva, with the hopes to soon meet a bona fide guru. Śrī Jagannātha, who is supremely compassionate and affectionate to those who take His shelter, quickly arranged for him to meet a bonafide guru and come in contact with His identical manifestation, the most worshipful Śrī Śrīla Prabhupāda.

guru kṛṣṇa-rūpa hana śāstrera pramāṇe
guru-rūpe kṛṣṇa-kṛpā karena bhakta-gaṇe

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta (Ādi-līlā 1.45)

The verdict of the scriptures is that guru is the form of Kṛṣṇa. In the form of guru, Kṛṣṇa bestows His mercy on the devotees.

His appearance and early childhood

Pūjyapāda Mahārāja appeared in a religious brāhmaṇa family with the surname ‘Pāṇḍā.’ The family lived in a small village called Duramuṭha, which is in the Kāñthi subdivision of the Medinīpura district of West Bengal. His mother and father, who were both devotees, were amazed to see their darling son’s natural attachment to the Lord from early childhood, and they always prayed at Bhagavān’s lotus feet to grant him a long and devotional life.

When he began his studies, his teachers and guardians were amazed at his extraordinary brilliance. Cultivating knowledge as a student for many years only strengthened the boy’s natural desire to worship Bhagavān. It was as if the Lord personally sent him to Śrī Puruṣottama-dhāma, where by the boundless mercy of Śrī Puruṣottama Jagannātha-deva, he attained the fortune of accepting shelter at the lotus feet of a bona fide guru. Śrī Hari is like a desire-tree, and He never leaves the desires of His devotees unfulfilled. Rather, He fulfills them quickly.

The exemplary character of a resolute sādhaka

In 1926, on the auspicious occasion of Śrī Śrī Gaura’s appearance, he received śrī harināma mahā-mantra and īṣṭa-mantra dīkṣā from śrī gurupādapadma, and thereafter became known as Śrī Sarveśvara dāsa Brahmacārī. On the instruction of Śrīla Prabhupāda, he engaged himself with great conviction in the ritual worship (arcana) and service of Śrī Śrī Guru-Gaurāṅga Gāndhārvikā-Giridhārī-jiu three times daily at the principal temple, ākara maṭha-rāja Śrī Caitanya Maṭha in Śrīdhāma Māyāpura. He also diligently studied Śrī Harināmāmṛta-vyākaraṇa and other scriptures at the maṭha’s institute for higher learning. Never wasting any time in sleep, laziness or idle gossip, Śrī Sarveśvara Brahmacārī spent all of his time in the practices of worship as directed by his śrī guru; serving Śrī Hari, guru and Vaiṣṇavas; and studying Śrī Bhagavad-gītā and Bhāgavatam. In this way, he exhibited the exemplary character of a resolute sādhaka.

His character was exceedingly pure and spotless, and he was the embodiment of peacefulness, gentleness and sweetness. His exchanges with everyone were innocent and affectionate. The Vaiṣṇavas of the maṭha and pious people who came to hear hari-kathā were attracted by the simplicity with which he presented scriptural conclusions regarding spiritual relationship (sambandha), practice (abhidheya), and the ultimate goal (prayojana). He would especially captivate and attract the hearts of audiences by singing in his honey-like voice the sweet songs of the previous Vaiṣṇava ācāryas.

Ornamented with endless vaisnava qualities

The scriptures state, “kṛṣṇa-bhakte kṛṣṇa-guṇa sakali sañcāre—Kṛṣṇa infuses His devotees with all of His qualities.” Truly, Śrī Yāyāvara Mahārāja was ornamented with endless Vaiṣṇava qualities. The simple language he used to explain extremely difficult philosophical concepts charmed scholars and non-scholars alike. All types of listeners yearned to repeatedly hear his unprecedented lectures on scriptures like Bhagavad-gītā and Śrīmad Bhāgavatam. I personally witnessed pūjyapāda Yāyāvara Mahārāja attract the hearts and minds of the chairman, the chief guest, and all the earnest listeners gathered at an illustrious assembly of learned scholars at Śrī Caitanya Gauḍīya Maṭha in southern Kolkata.

His publications are worthy of careful study

Even while he was ill, with the help of his scholarly disciples, pūjyapāda Yāyāvara Mahārāja published several books, one of which was his Śrī Śrī Bhāgavata-gītāmṛta. In the first and second sections of this book, he published several songs he composed himself. Of the contents therein, the poetic and simple explanations of Bhagavad-gītā and the four-verse (catuḥ-ślokī) form of Bhāgavatam are particularly worthy of careful study.

The world’s great loss

Today, with the loss of such an exalted devotee and kindred spirit, my heart feels especially hollow. The Gauḍīya Vaiṣṇava community is gradually becoming bereft of devotees who relish pure bhakti-rasa. The diminishing number of earnest speakers and listeners dedicated to the conclusive message of pure devotion as propagated by Śrīman Mahāprabhu is a great loss for the world. The void left by this loss is unable to be filled, and it heralds dark days and great misfortune. These dark days keep any chances for good days at bay.

Utterly irreplaceable

By His mercy, Kṛṣṇa eventually draws all of His associates back to Him and admits them into His eternal pastimes. But if from time to time He decides to withhold His mercy and order them not to return to this mortal world, there is no way to dispel the resulting dark days the living entities of this world experience as they are devoured by māyā. Overwhelmed with separation on the occasion of Ṭhākura Haridāsa’s disappearance, Śrīman Mahāprabhu said:

kṛpā kôri’ kṛṣṇa more diyāchilô saṅga
svatantra kṛṣṇera icchā hôilô saṅga bhaṅga

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta (Antya-līlā 11.94)

Mercifully, Kṛṣṇa gave me [Haridāsa Ṭhākura’s] association. By Kṛṣṇa’s independent will, our exchange has ended.

haridāsa āchilô pṛthivīra ratna-śiromaṇi
tāhā binā ratna-śunyā hôilā medinī

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta (Antya-līlā 11.97)

Haridāsa was the crown jewel of this Earth. Without him, it is as if she is bereft of all jewels.

Truly, Vaiṣṇavas like nitya-līlā-praviṣṭa tridaṇḍi-gosvāmī Śrīmad Bhakti Dayita Mādhava Mahārāja, nitya-līlā-praviṣṭa tridaṇḍi-gosvāmī Śrīmad Bhakti Hṛdaya Vana Mahārāja, nitya-līlā-praviṣṭa Śrīmat Kṛṣṇadāsa Bābājī Mahārāja and nitya-līlā-praviṣṭa tridaṇḍi-gosvāmī Śrīmad Bhakti Vicāra Yāyāvara Mahārāja are saviors of this world and are utterly irreplaceable. They can be compared only with themselves.

Millions of millions of times more exalted than me

The founder of Śrī Caitanya Gauḍīya Maṭha, nitya-līlā-praviṣṭa pujyapāda tridaṇḍi-gosvāmī Śrīmad Bhakti Dayita Mādhava Mahārāja and pūjyapāda Yāyāvara Mahārāja were especially close friends. During the various special festivals organized in Śrīla Mādhava Mahārāja’s centers, pūjyapāda Yāyāvara Mahārāja would come and grant all his godbrothers and their disciples the great fortune of his rare association. He would especially visit the Kolkata maṭha often, even apart from festivals, and bless us with his divine association. Today, recalling the heartfelt, genuinely affectionate words he spoke during such visits causes my heart to become exceedingly agitated and overwhelmed with emotion.

We viewed pūjyapāda Yāyāvara Mahārāja as our worshipful Prabhupāda’s youngest son, whom he treated with great respect and heartfelt affection. Śrīla Mahārāja was approximately seventy-eight at the time of his disappearance. Although he was somewhat younger than me in age, in terms of knowledge and bhajana, he was millions of millions of times richer and more exalted.

My anxious prayers at his lotus feet

Alas, I am so unfortunate! I could never have imagined he could have left us so soon, thereby drowning us forever in an ocean of sorrow. My inability to foresee this deprived me of receiving his darśana one last time.

Surely, he regarded all of his godbrothers equally, but it seems he looked upon such a fallen, destitute and unfortunate wretch as me with more affection. Whatever the case, I anxiously pray at his lotus feet that he may bestow his causeless mercy upon me and absolve me of any offenses I may have committed against him, whether knowingly or unknowingly, for he is the topmost among Vaiṣṇavas and ignores the faults of all others.

Śrī Yāyāvara Mahārāja is a dear and intimate associate of our supremely worshipful Prabhupāda, who has surely granted him the eligibility to enter the pastimes of Śrī Śrī Rādhā-Govinda. May he supplicate at the feet of the most compassionate Śrīla Prabhupāda to grant a genuine glance of mercy upon this wretch.

His life’s concern and effort

After paramārādhya Prabhupāda’s disappearance, our godbrothers’ sense of cooperation faded due to a divergence in views, and many groups were formed as a result. But throughout his life, pūjyapāda Mahārāja’s concern and effort was fixed in fulfilling the inner desire of Śrī Śrīla Prabhupāda, who instructed his disciples, “You should remain together under the guidance of the āśraya-vigraha, the repository of devotion, for the express purpose of satisfying the transcendental senses of the one Absolute Truth.”

His firm conviction in performing genuine rāga-bhakti

Śrīla Mahārāja’s conviction in performing nāma-bhajana was highly exemplary. Even when he was very ill, he set an example of performing one lakh nāma daily. Both paramārādhya Śrī Śrīla Ṭhākura Bhaktivinoda and Śrī Śrīla Prabhupāda outlined that distinctions between Vaiṣṇavas should be determined according to the varying degrees of taste they have in nāma. Should a person be devoid of conviction in nāma-bhajana, neither Śrīla Bhaktivinoda Ṭhākura nor Śrīla Prabhupāda would ever accept their pretense of rāgānugā-bhakti as genuine rāga-bhakti.

A prayer for enthusiasm in bhajana

In pūjypadāda Yāyāvara Mahārāja’s absence, the maṭha and mandiras he established appear as if lifeless. Like the residents of those institutions, we too have become melancholy in the absence of our Vaiṣṇava friend. My sole entreaty at his lotus feet is that he infuse his potency into his disciples and bring them back to life. I pray he may cast a glance of mercy toward us as well, and thereby grant us enthusiasm in bhajana. The disciples of pūjyapāda Mādhava Mahārāja and also the new ācārya of Mādhava Mahārāja’s institution are all the recipients of pūjyapāda Yāyāvara Gosvāmīpāda’s affection. They are all anguished by his separation and are praying for his mercy. Everyone’s anxious prayer is that he may shower his affection upon them from that eternal abode.

I would like to express my affection to the family of Sri Radha Raman Temple of Vrindavan, specially to Padmanabh and Padmalochan, for the departure of Sharda Goswami, the wife of Vishvambhar Goswami. Although I am far from India (France), I felt years a profound love for Sharda Goswami of Radha Raman. She was a wonderful lady, great Vaishnavi, beautiful from the outside and inside. I am writing this to say that in the WVA spirit we are all related to the love of Radha Raman, love of God. That is the upmost reality. I remember Vishwambar Goswami came to France more than 25 years ago and invited me to visited Vrindavan. I came and he received me in his own house like his own son, most beautifully. Our Gurudevs, Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada and Bhaktisvarupa Damodar Maharaj, had both great appreciation for Vishvambhar Goswami. The idea of fraternity of Srila Prabhupada was visible in a letter which he sent to Vishvambar Goswami in 1958, while he was mayor of Vrindavan. In this letter Srila Prabhupada expressed the need to created fraternity and cooperation among all maths of Vrindavan. So naturally the Radha Raman family and wonderful devotees like Sharda Goswami are members of our Vaishnava family.

His Holiness Srila Bhakti Ballabh Tirtha Goswami Maharaja,

I bow my head and prostrate my body at your lotus feet.

Upon being invited to share my heart on the holy occasion of your Vyasa Puja, I am grateful.

I am remembering the precious times that we spent together, sometimes in the hills of Sri Brajabhumi or at other times in the hills of Marin County, California. Wherever in the world you are, you are ever absorbed in dispelling materialistic and impersonal misconceptions while sharing your heart’s love for the divine service of Sri Guru and Sri Gauranga.

We have all been blessed by your heartfelt humility, deep wisdom of the Bhakti Sastras, and profound compassion to all beings.

Your lifetime of loving service is a brilliant light that reveals, for people in this world of darkness, the infinite flow of grace that is forever descending from the hearts of Sri Sri Radha Gopinath and floods the world through the merciful Acaryas of our Gaudiya Parampara. On this sacred day of your Vyasa Puja, I offer you my sincerest gratitude.
